Independent lab testing
Before you put any device near your cat, you should know what it emits. So we paid a laboratory to measure ours, and here's the number.
Ozone concentration, measured
CARB is the strictest air purifier standard in the United States. Every purifier legally sold in California must sit under that top bar. This device measures 49 times below it.
Every negative ion device produces a trace of ozone. Not some of them — all of them, as an unavoidable by-product of how the technology works. Anyone telling you their ioniser produces none is either mistaken or hoping you won't ask.
So the honest question isn't whether. It's how much. And that's a question you're entitled to a real answer to, not a reassurance.
We paid an independent third-party laboratory to measure it, and published what came back.
The result was 0.002 mg/m³.
The California Air Resources Board sets the strictest air purifier standard in the US. To be sold legally in California, a device has to stay below 0.050 parts per million — roughly 0.098 mg/m³. Thousands of ordinary purifiers sitting in ordinary homes pass under that bar.
This measures 49 times below it.
One thing worth clearing up: 0.002 mg/m³ is a concentration, not a rate. It's how much ozone a cubic metre of air around the device contains — so there's no "per hour" attached to it, and it doesn't accumulate.
It works like a thermometer. A room at 20°C isn't 20°C per hour. It's just 20°C.
Nothing. That's the honest answer.
Ozone is already part of the air you breathe. It's outdoors every day, and on a bright afternoon the air outside your window holds more of it than this device produces. That sharp, clean smell after a thunderstorm is ozone at concentrations far higher than anything measured here.
The output is low enough that most consumer ozone meters can't register it. Detecting it takes laboratory equipment.
You won't smell it or notice it. Neither will your cat.
It comes down to power, and this is the part that matters most.

Producing ozone at meaningful levels takes serious energy. At 1 watt, that energy simply isn't there.
This matters because it isn't a setting that could drift, or a filter that could wear out and start behaving differently. It's a hard physical ceiling on what the device can ever emit — on day one and on day one thousand.
You've read correctly, and you should keep taking that seriously.
Ozone generators are a real hazard
Those devices produce ozone deliberately, at high concentration, as their entire method of operation. The EPA warns against them, and CARB maintains a public list of hazardous units sold as air purifiers. Avoid them.
This is not one of those devices. It doesn't generate ozone as its function, and at 1 watt it couldn't if it tried. It's a negative ion device, and the power ceiling makes high output impossible regardless of settings, age or wear.
We're also not asking you to take that on trust. An independent laboratory measured it. The number is on this page, and the full certificate is available on request.
Ozone in quantity is genuinely something to respect. So is sunlight — fifteen minutes of summer sun carries enough UV to damage skin DNA, and it's also how your body makes vitamin D.
Almost nothing is safe or dangerous in isolation. The dose decides. That's as true of a medicine as it is of a toxin.
At 0.002 mg/m³, this is a dose so small that most equipment can't find it.
Independently tested with exactly that use in mind. Plug it in near the litter box and stop thinking about the smell.
